Thanks to a tip from a friend, I tried a new snack this week! They are called cracker chips
and are made by Special K. I tried the sour cream and onion flavor, but my friend also recommends the sea salt flavor. The bottom line is they are just delicious.
The crisp is more like baked chips than a cracker. In my opinion, they taste better than baked chips, and they are not greasy at all! You find this tasty snack in the aisle with the crackers, not the chips. Also similar to crackers, they come in a box with a bag inside for freshness.
This is what one serving looks like. WOW! You get 27 chips or 30 grams. Personally I always weigh my portions because I want to be sure I’m not cheating myself out of a chip or two! 🙂 I think this looks like a great size serving!
The box is 4 ounces and contains 3.5 servings. Really, Special K? 3.5 servings? Who is going to eat 1/2 a serving? I’m pretty sure most people will eat 2 full servings and then 1 1/2 servings to finish off the box!! I just don’t understand why manufacturers package stuff the way they do! Anyway, the size of the box is pretty comparable to other boxes of crackers, but it is way fewer servings than a bag of pretzels. My bag of pretzels contains 16 servings!
So, what about price? I was able to get a box of cracker chips at Wal Mart for $2.50 while Acme charges $3.69. Based on the Wal-Mart price, that’s about 71 cents per serving. That bag of pretzels I mentioned was only $2.78 for a much bigger bag, and they are only 17 cents per serving. Ouch…that’s a big difference. However, pretzels are heavier and a serving of pretzels is visually much smaller – 17 pretzels compared to 27 cracker chips. In terms of enjoyment, the cracker chips win hands down.
We all know that chips in general are not the “healthiest” choice in terms of nutrition, but these are way better than many other chips. The stats are listed below.
