I’ve never been a big beef jerky person, but I had been wanting to try this since Hungry Girl has recommended it several times. I finally had my first taste because Hungry Girl gave away free samples on her book tour – yay! I liked it so much that I bought the assortment pack so we could try all the flavors. Seriously, this stuff is amazing. We liked every single flavor. We have our favorites of course, but we still liked all of them.
This jerky is unlike any I’ve tried before. Some dried meat is SO tough and hard to chew, but not this stuff. It is tender and delicious. To make it even better, the jerky is all natural, gluten free, and comes from meat with no antibiotics or added hormones. You can read more about their ingredients at the Simply Snackin website.
The jerky comes in 1 oz single serving packages and requires no refrigeration. I love that they are pre-portioned, but I love it even more that they don’t have to be kept cold. I can just keep one in my purse and never have to worry about being without a healthy snack when I need one. AND I don’t have to worry about them melting like a protein bar!
Each serving is only 60 calories. The beef and venison flavors are 2 points+, and the chicken flavors are all 1 points+. SCORE! They have 9 flavors, so there is something for everyone. You can start with the sampler like I did if you want to find your favorites before buying larger quantities. They offer 3 beef, 4 chicken, and 2 venison with beef options.

I love these snacks for a nice protein boost to keep me full between meals. I usually have string cheese for one of my daily snacks, but it needs to be kept cold. I don’t have that concern with the jerky. Another nice benefit is that the jerky has 9-11 grams of protein (depending on flavor) vs the 6 grams of protein in the string cheese. Of course there are other benefits to eating dairy, but this is a great option if you are looking to get more protein.
As I’ve started half marathon training, I have long runs on the weekends. You have to think about refueling your body when you are running long distances. There’s a great article on Active.com that talks about replenishing sodium with bacon during and after a run. It recommends replenishing 400 to 700 milligrams of sodium per hour, and 600 to 1000 milligrams of sodium per hour during hot months. I’m thinking that this jerky is going to become my new favorite sodium replenisher. Each snack has 280-300 mg of sodium, depending on the flavor, so two snacks should take care of it! I do love bacon, but prepackaged jerky sounds a whole lot more convenient if you ask me.
Have you tried it yet? What’s your favorite flavor? Share your thoughts in the comments!
