After her divorce, Barbara was not happy with her image because she knew she had so much more to offer.  She made the CHOICE to lose the weight she had been carrying for 10 years! By losing the weight, she gained the confidence she needed to move forward with her life.

What led you to being overweight?

Overeating, eating the wrong things and lack of exercise.

I had been overweight (5’4″ and over 200lbs) for almost 10 yrs. I was always considered attractive in my face but I knew that I could be a lot more attractive if I could lose some weight! I had been married and divorced.  I was feeling lonely and in need of a relationship that satisfied.  I knew that I would not feel very confident about myself unless I lost the weight. So I made up my mind once and for all to lose the weight. Its all about choice!

Why were you successful THIS TIME? What was different from your previous attempts to lose weight?

This time I was seriously dating and wanted to be as confident as I could be. I knew the weight loss would do it. I was also concerned about my health. High blood pressure and diabetes was impacting my life and I needed to change my lifestyle (both diet and exercise) in order to gain some control on my health.

What program did you follow to lose weight?

MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING WAS PRAYER!  Pray for discipline and guidance. TRUST ME, PRAYER WORKS!

1.Daily exercise. Nothing elaborate. I started by doing 30 mins of walking every morning on the treadmill, then 30 mins twice a day. Now I do one hour every morning. I walk between 3.5- 4 mph. THE KEY IS CONSISTENCY! Try not to miss a day.

2. Drink lots of water!! (Up to 1/2 gallon/day). I drink lemon water upon arising. (1-2 lemons in 8 oz water. I usually drink this before my daily exercise.) I try not to drink anything else but water. Sometimes I use low calorie soy or almond milk to mix a drink called GlucAffect (up to three times a day), which is supposed to help regulate my blood sugar and help with weight loss.  On rare occasions, I drink 4-6 oz of juice, but no more than once daily.

3. Absolutely no added sugar, no bread, no rice, no potatoes and avoid all other starches. If you must eat starch do so in tiny amounts. Eat more protein to take away the hunger pangs, like fish, chicken, turkey, beans, nuts, or other foods high in protein.

4. I ate ONLY fruit in the mornings, and a handful of almonds if hungry. (My fruit combo every morning is 1 grapefruit, 5-6 strawberries, 1 kiwi fruit, and a handful of blueberries.)

5. At lunch time, I ate a raw vegetable salad with protein (such as tuna salad) or soup (such as lentil soup, split pea soup, black bean soup, etc.)  I had NO crackers or bread and drank ONLY water.

6. I tried not to eat anything at all after 6pm. For dinner, I ate a salad or soup again.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T SKIP MEALS!!! Skipping meals will only slow down the weight loss process. At the same time, do not overeat, and drink lots of water!

I also used a combination of black seed oil (1 tsp), cinnamon (1 tsp) and honey (1 Tbsp) in a 1/4 glass of water 30 mins before eating anything in the morning and at nights before going to bed. Not sure if it works, but its supposed to help with the weight loss process.

If you follow Weight Watchers, what type of membership do you have? Do you attend meetings or follow the program online only?

I did not follow weight watchers, but I understand how it works. I am a registered nurse, and I believe the weight watchers plan is one of the healthiest ways to lose weight and be successful with long term weight loss.

How did you stay committed and focused after the initial honeymoon stage?

I was dating and wanted to look my best. The weight loss is what motivated me. Being able to get into clothing that I hadn’t worn in years and the confidence I achieved as a result is what kept me going.

How do you avoid emotional eating and/or binge eating?

I prayed and asked for divine strength.  I also stayed active doing things that I enjoyed other than eating. I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me. I was DETERMINED and I knew that whether I binged or not was totally up to me. Mind over matter. It was a CHOICE. I chose NOT to.

What were the key lifestyle changes that you HAD to make in order to be successful?

I had to force myself to get up early every morning to exercise, knowing that my efforts would be in vain if I couldn’t find the discipline to continue. I also gave up the excessive eating of high calorie foods, eating in between meals, and overeating.

What online tools or apps do you use to manage your weight?

I think CALORIE COUNT is an awesome FREE site for keeping watch of my calorie intake.

What are your most important kitchen tools?

~ Blender for mixing smoothies
~ Lemon squeezer for morning lemon water

What do you do for exercise?

I walk one hour a day on a treadmill.

Barbara After smallerHow do you handle friends or family that try to sabotage your efforts?

I haven’t had to deal with this.  When I get tempted by others to overeat, I remind them that I have a goal and I won’t get there doing the things I used to do.

What is the biggest difference in your life since the weight loss?

Self confidence! I also feel healthier and more energetic.

What do you still struggle with?

I sometimes struggle with making healthy food choices! Fruits and vegetables are NOT my favorite foods! LOL

What would you say to someone who thinks they cannot be successful with their own weight loss?

There is nothing that you cannot do! Make a decision to lose the weight and tell yourself daily that you will NOT allow your body to control your mind. PRAY DAILY and ask for divine help. You can do ALL things though Christ who strengthens you.

Do you have any final thoughts to share? Is there anything else you want included in your success story?

I just want to encourage anyone who is overweight.  You are only a decision away from reaching your goal!  The choice is yours!

What I didn’t mention in my “interview’ is that not only did I lose the weight, but I also found the guy of my dreams and we got married!!
