IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN!

After being overweight for most of her life, Audra changed her life and lost an astounding 140 pounds in 14 months!!!  Read the interview to hear how she has been so successful!

  • Name: Audra
  • Age: 47
  • Turning Point: Wanting the best quality of life
  • Weight Loss Plan: Diet & Exercise
  • Weight Loss: 140 pounds
  • Biggest Change: Looking decades younger

What led you to being overweight?

I grew up in a two parent home with one other sibling. We lived in an upper-middle class neighborhood that was very diverse in culture. I began battling the “bulge” at around age ten. I was always a “big girl” and was made fun of by both boys and girls a lot.  People would tell me that I ate too much, was fat, and that I needed to lose weight. Unfortunately, no one ever helped, educated or encouraged me on how to lose weight beyond the negative comments. This left me to my own devices.

I thought the only way to lose weight was by not eating or barely eating. I would get on the scale almost every hour thinking that it was going to move. I didn’t do any exercise other than short or long distance walking because I really wasn’t a fan of exercise. I would also compete with a childhood friend to see who could go the longest without eating during the day. Man, was I uneducated. I even remember checking how much it would cost to have my mouth wired.

What prompted you to make a change? Why did you start?

I never had any ailments associated with obesity, but by the time I reached age 40, I began to get serious about losing the weight and becoming more healthy. My motivation was my family and my desire to avoid the illnesses that can come with being overweight like high blood pressure, Diabetes, and back pain. I wanted to live the best quality of life.

Why were you successful THIS TIME? What was different from your previous attempts to lose weight?

I have to attribute my success to God first and foremost. It’s been 8+ years, and I am still amazed at my before and after pictures. The second secret to my success was changing my diet and incorporating an exercise regimen into my life.

What program did you follow to lose weight?

I created my own meal plan, which you can see below:

BREAKFAST
(Drink at least 1 small bottle 16.9 oz of water before eating)
Quaker Oatmeal or Special K (Protein Plus) Cereal
1/4 or 1/2 Grapefruit or 1/2 of an Orange

SNACK
(Between 10:00 & 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 & 3:00 p.m.)
(Drink at least 1 small bottle 16.9 oz of water before eating)
1/4 or 1/2 can of Fruit Cocktail or Sliced Peaches w/Splenda (No Sugar Added)
or other 1/2 of the Orange or Grapefruit
Cottage Cheese w/fruit
Quaker Reduced Sugar Granola Bar (90 Calories)
Sugar Free Jell-O

LUNCH
(Drink at least 1 small bottle 16.9 oz of water before eating)
Salad with or without Grilled Chicken (with Reduced Fat Dressing)
Campbells “Healthy Request” Soups (Savory Chicken & Rice, Chicken & Pasta or Mexican Tortilla)
These soups have 40% to 50% less sodium than the regular soups & can range from 110 to 190 calories per can
Ritz Reduced Fat Crackers

DINNER
(Drink at least 1 small bottle 16.9 oz of water before eating)
I basically alternate from the Lunch Menu most of the time (e.g. Soup for Lunch, Salad for Dinner or vice versa). However, I do sometimes eat the following to give myself a break:

Chicken Breast or Ground Turkey Patty grilled on the George Foreman Grill
Frozen Peas or Corn or Brocolli (Frozen or Fresh)
Frozen veggies carry less Sodium than canned ones
1/2 baked Potato

DESSERT OR SNACK AFTER DINNER
100 Calorie Pack Chips a’ Hoy or
Sugar Free Jello & Fruit Cocktail w/Fat Free or Sugar Free Cool Whip

BEVERAGES OTHER THAN WATER
Fuse Non-Carbonated Beverages (Look for the Low Carb varieties) – These drinks are very low calorie and are infused with vitamins & minerals.
Arizona Diet Green Tea
Crystal Light Beverages

Audra Before and After

How did you stay committed and focused after the initial honeymoon stage?

I’m a self-starter so once I get started and begin to see results, I like what I see and desire to keep it that way.

How do you avoid emotional eating and/or binge eating?

When it comes to eating out of emotions, I ask myself “why” I want to eat that particular item. I am sensitive and my mental alarm goes off if I try to reach for something right after a stressful situation. That’s when I will stop and ask myself “why”. If it still cannot fend off the urge to eat, I make sure that whatever I eat is healthy.   For example: If I have a urge for something sweet like candy, I’ll substitute it for a piece of fruit or trail mix instead.

What were the key lifestyle changes that you HAD to make in order to be successful?

Consistency and slow gradual changes were very key and instrumental in my success and still are today.

What online tools or apps do you use to manage your weight?

I really don’t use apps but I did start a Facebook Health and Wellness Group for Women Only called Sister’s Getting Fit For the Kingdom about 4+ years ago.  It is a source to remain encouraged and encourage others at the same time.  The group is a CLOSED group but women can still send a request to join at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/382647705088458/

I am also writing a book about my weight loss testimony!

What do you do for exercise?

I workout at the gym about 6 days a week for an hour up to 2 hours. I do cardio (treadmill, elliptical, & stationary bike) and the machines.

How do you handle friends or family that try to sabotage your efforts?

When the weight initially came off, it was drastic to many that knew me before.  They would make negative comments. Some would assume that I had Bariatric Surgery. Men would tell me that no man would want to be with me because there wasn’t enough meat on me to hold on to. Lastly, some people would beg me to gain weight and say that I looked better heavier. I was like, NO WAY!!!

What is the biggest difference in your life since the weight loss?

I look decades younger today than I did when I was in my early to mid twenties!

What do you still struggle with?

I have extra skin in my mid section. I would love to have that surgically removed so that my body would be more proportioned.

What would you say to someone who thinks they cannot be successful with their own weight loss?

I say to anyone that thinks that they can’t be successful that, IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN!

What mantra/quote/scripture do you rely on when things are difficult?

This is my Rock Scripture:
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Do you have any final thoughts to share? Is there anything else you want included in your success story?

Yes. My final thoughts are: Ladies, health and wellness is a life journey that involves the mind, body, soul and spirit. Love yourself right now while you take steps on the way to where you want to be. Slow gradual changes are key to success and longevity. Keep in mind that no matter the method, whether it’s done the natural way with diet and exercise or with surgery, whatever you do you will need to MANAGE.

Audra’s Testimony

It has been said that we cannot challenge/change what we don’t confront. Doing this requires us to take a GOOD LOOK in the mirror of our mind, body and spirit. It’s not always easy but it’s very necessary in order to peel back the layers. Sometimes this requires going all the way back to our childhood and upbringing as it served as a major role in how we think and act. There are even dormant areas from traumas in life that are revealed when we take that look in the mirror.

Much of my excess weight gain was the result of “life stress, low-self-esteem, stuffing my emotions” and using food as a soother/comforter. It wasn’t until I got that revelation of my true identity in HIM and embracing it that I began to go beyond just praying and wishing God would just do all the work. I realized He gave me a part to play in this journey and that He was not going to do all the work BUT, when I would do what I COULD DO, HE WOULD STEP IN AND HELP ME DO WHAT I COULDN’T DO because where I am WEAK, HE IS STRONG.

I began to channel my stress by working it off in the gym, writing and encouraging others. These steps along with many other things I did with the help of God has played a major role in keeping the excess weight off. It is because of who HE IS that I am who I AM TODAY and I love HIM and thank HIM for it.

I hope you are inspired by Audra’s amazing transformation. She is working to help inspire others to change their lives as well.  If her story speaks to you, reach out to her. I know she would appreciate hearing that her story is helping others.
